Inverse Kinematics in the next Flash

Adobe previewed a potential feature of the next Flash at their latest MAX. Bones in Flash!!! That would be a great feature, and judging be the audience reaction, a lot of folks agree. Coming from 3D, I really would think bones and Inverse Kinematics would be a great addition. I’ve always kept my eye on Moho, or now Anime Studio (yuk – bad name) because they had bones that I always wanted to try. It basically deforms the 2D shape as you rotate the bones. Let’s hope this new feature makes it in. Unfortunately, that’s going to be quite a long wait. Until then, it can be programatically done, it’s a chapter in Keith Peter’s book, Foundation ActionScript Animation: Making Things Move!. I haven’t read the book yet, it’s soon on my list.

Interesting Bioshock article

I have been writing a lot about Bioshock lately. This shows how much the game sat with me. Destructoid had a great article about the way Bioshock tells it’s story, through a few cut-scenes, audio logs, etc. While I may not agree with the fact that there are any flaws in the storytelling, it was a thought-provoking read. It also shows the depth of the game, definitely not your ordinary shooter. By the way, finish the game before you read this, it gives away everything.

Bioshock Art Book

The team behind the wonderful Bioshock have provided us with a nice little gem. They have released the Art book that was in the running to come with the Limited Edition game free on their website. It comes in at 78 pages, and showcases much of the concept art and development sketches for characters, weapons, environments and more. It’s a nice view into the process of the game design, something that should be showcased by more game companies. Behind every game there are thousands of man-hours designing every detail, color, character, and sound. This does barely scratch the surface of what is in the game. The environment is super realistic in it’s signage and advertisements in every room of Rapture. It’s also a wonderful history lesson of 1940′s design. Bear in mind a spoiler in the foreward, save that for after the game.

Yes, there’s been no updates for ages. This site hasn’t even gotten off the ground yet. Work has been busy, working on some good projects. I went through Gears of War at the first two difficulties, what an incredible experience. I am currently playing the beautiful and interesting Bioshock. Reviews of both games to come.

FlashForward Keynote – Flash CS3 Preview

Possibly missed among the furor over the iPhone today was the Keynote address from the FlashForward conference. The new Flash CS3 interface and a few features were previewed. Im excited to see how it looks, and most importanly, how it runs, especially on a Mac. I am hoping it will run like a dream on any newer Intel Macs, but we’ll see.

The iPhone

Wow, the iPhone looks to be a major player in the phone market. Over the past few months I’ve been hearing the rumors, I figured Apple would come out with something amazing. I was unprepared at how revolutionary this thing could be. An accelerometer built in, allowing you to tilt your phone. The typing looks pretty neat, it emulates a typewriter as you type, the letters being ‘punched’ right above the key area. Got to love how everything is touch-based, and the different gestures is very intuitive. That will turn heads a lot more than my Treo 650, that’s for sure.
